Heavy equipment undercarriage is the support system that helps move heavy machinery. As a critical component, the condition of the undercarriage directly impacts how the machine performs and operates. In this article, we will uncover the most crucial parts of your machine's undercarriage and a few preventative maintenance tips to keep it ready for the job ahead.
Track Chains
Track chains help in the movement of the equipment. These chains are made up of two rows of links that are joined with pins and bushings.
Track Shoes
Track shoes are the plates on the machine that are in direct contact with the ground. Pins, bolts, or hinges can attach to the links. Track shoes can be made of steel or rubber, each providing specific purposes depending on the job. The traction of the shoes allows the equipment to move forward or backward.
Track Adjusters
Track adjusters keep tension on the track chain. Operating as either a hydraulic or mechanical device, track adjusters ensure proper track alignment on the equipment.
Rollers
Rollers are cylindrical wheels located on the upper and lower sides of the undercarriage. The track rollers are bolted to the bottom of the frame, distributing the machine’s weight and direction. To prevent the track from bowing, the upper rollers are mounted onto the track frame.
Idlers
Idlers are stationary wheels that support track alignment and maintain the tension within the undercarriage. Depending on the final drive position design of the machine, there may be two idlers or just one front idler.
Sprockets
A sprocket is the large, toothed wheel at the back of the undercarriage. Its main purpose is to move the track by connecting its teeth with the track’s bushings. The sprocket is attached to the final drive unit, giving the component its movement. As it rotates, the equipment is propelled forward or backward.
Preventative Maintenance
Check for wear & tear
Checking your machine’s components regularly can ensure it continues to function and perform well. Due to the harsh operating conditions, these machines are exposed more than any other vehicle. Wear and tear of these crucial components can lead to increased downtime.
Daily check of fluid leaks
Fluid leakage can lead to multiple issues within the undercarriage. From oil to hydraulic fluid leaks, components such as bearings, gaskets, and more depend on these regular fluids. If leakage occurs, your machine can begin to see increased wear, reduced performance, and potential damage to surrounding components.
Cleaning of the equipment
If your machine is experiencing regular breakdowns due to undercarriage issues, especially after rough working conditions, it may be advisable to clean the equipment regularly after each job. The accumulation of debris, rocks, and uneven terrain can lead to damage in the tracks or misalignments. A quick rinse with a hose or removing the rocks from small spaces can lead to the overall performance and lifespan of your equipment.
