This week, two major road safety campaigns are underway, bringing global to the urgent need for safer streets and highways. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 2025 International Roadcheck and the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week both aim to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities, but each does so from a different angle. Together, they highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to transportation safety.
CVSA International Roadcheck 2025
May 13–15, 2025
Focus Areas: Driver Operating Requirements & Tire Safety
CVSA’s International Roadcheck initiative focuses on the safety of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and their operators. This 72-hour enforcement blitz, held across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, is the largest targeted inspection program for commercial vehicles in North America. Tens of thousands of inspections will take place at weigh stations, inspection sites, and roadside locations.
Focus Area 1: Driver Operating Requirements
Inspectors will check compliance with:
- Hours-of-Service (HOS) rules to prevent fatigue
- Licensing and medical certification
- Record of Duty Status and Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), which must be current, accurate, and tamper-free
Focus Area 2: Tire Safety
Inspectors will assess:
- Tire tread depth
- Proper inflation
- Visible damage such as cuts or bulges
Vehicles that pass a Level I or Level V inspection without critical violations may receive a CVSA decal, signaling compliance and helping reduce the likelihood of further inspections during the decal’s validity period.
In 2024, more than 48,000 inspections were conducted during the Roadcheck event, with over 9,000 vehicles and nearly 2,300 drivers placed out of service. The most common vehicle violation was Defective Service Brakes, accounting for 25% of all vehicle out-of-service violations. English Language Proficiency was recently added to the U.S. out-of-service criteria, but will not go into effect until June 25th, 2025. This year’s campaign aims to not only enforce regulations, but also educate operators on maintaining compliance and safety best practices.

8th UN Global Road Safety Week
May 12–18, 2025
“Make Walking and Cycling Safe”
Organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the 8th edition of UN Global Road Safety Week zeroes in on the safety of the most vulnerable road users: pedestrians and cyclists. With over 1.3 million people dying in road traffic crashes every year and a significant portion of those being non-motorized road users, this year’s campaign aims to shift global attention toward the urgent need for safer infrastructure and policies that prioritize human life over vehicle speed and convenience.
Key Campaign Goals:
- Promote Safety: Walking and cycling are vital for health and reducing environmental impact, but many people avoid them due to safety concerns. The campaign advocates for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists worldwide.
- Support Sustainable Urban Planning: Safe walking and cycling help to reduce emissions and traffic congestion.
- Encourage Government Action: The campaign calls on policymakers to adopt safety measures such as protected bike lanes, reduced speed limits in urban areas, and better traffic enforcement.
Throughout the week, webinars, public events, and online campaigns will bring together urban planners, policymakers, and civil society groups to collaborate and share insights.
As drivers, we are obligated to share the road and be aware of our surroundings. Those in heavy-duty trucks and other vehicles with limited visibility and lesser maneuverability must be especially vigilant.
More info and event details can be found on the UNEP campaign page.
A Shared Mission for Safer Roads
Though these two initiatives differ in scope and audience, they share a common goal: saving lives on the road. Whether it’s through redesigning streets for pedestrians or ensuring truck drivers are well-rested and vehicles are roadworthy, both campaigns are vital reminders that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
