Ultimate Truck Stop Guide: Safety Tips, Insider Tricks, and More

Truck Stop Guide

Whether you’re traveling on the road for work or vacation, we’ve compiled our favorite safety tips and insider tricks to use at any truck stop this summer. At Iron Wing, we want our customers to have the best experience possible while out on the road. Here are a few ways to make the most at your next stop:

Safety First

Be Courteous to Fellow Drivers

Whether you are parking a truck and trailer or a minivan, being courteous to the drivers around you is the best way to make your experience pleasant and efficient. Busy parking lots are the perfect environment for accidents waiting to happen. Therefore, while navigating parking areas, be sure to drive slowly and remain attentive to traffic patterns. For truckers, it may often be best to park away from fuel islands and high-traffic areas to avoid accidents. Respect the parking spaces that have been created, and issues will be minimal.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Taking a pit stop in unknown locations is often unavoidable while on the road. To leave safely and efficiently, keep to well-lit areas, whether driving at night or during the day. If you must leave your vehicle or take a short rest while on the road, lock your doors. Carrying a charged phone with you or having someone else accompany you can ensure help is on the way when emergencies strike. Lastly, before leaving, conduct a quick inspection of your vehicle to ensure it is prepared for the journey ahead.

Our Favorite Tricks

Map Out Your Stops

To prevent fuel or bathroom emergencies, locate the nearest truck stop or gas station along your route. There are several ways to map your stops, whether it is using a navigation app on your smart device, such as Google Maps, or carrying a travel book that maps out upcoming truck stops or travel centers. Finding the most common and reputable stops is best, as they often offer various clean and healthy food options, adequate amenities (e.g. clean showers, restrooms, laundry, etc.), and security. Nationwide travel centers, such as TravelCenters of America, consistently provide a predictable layout, allowing travelers to foresee the services and amenities that will be available to them. This way, travelers can plan to fuel up, take a restroom break, and catch lunch, before hitting the road again.

Download Apps for Deals, Rewards, and Cents Off Your Gallons

The easiest way to save money while on the road this summer is through some of our favorite travel apps. Downloading apps such as Love’s, BPme Rewards, Shell Fuel Rewards, and Upside can often earn you cash back or discounts on the purchases you make while on the road. Simply scanning a barcode on your mobile device can save you as much as 10 cents on your next purchase. While the savings may seem small, they can begin adding up for frequent travelers or those on a tighter budget.

Fuel Your Vehicle, then Fuel Yourself!

When traveling, the temptation to make swift stops—gas, bathroom, then go—is common. However, before hitting the road again, it is essential to not only refuel your vehicle but yourself as well. Pick up a quick sandwich, bottled water, or snack. It is advisable to stock up on extra emergency food and drinks too, in case of traffic delays or inclement weather. Be wary of overspending during your stops, though. You may find yourself in need of specialty items, such as toiletries, phone chargers, or unnecessary clothing items. To avoid overspending on that $10 bottle of shampoo, stock up on your necessities before you hit the road. During your stop, wake your mind and body up by adding in some stretches or a quick exercise. Many apps, websites, and videos are available online if you need some ideas on where to start.

Organize Yourself

Whether it’s organizing your cab, your car, or your wallet, taking the time to organize yourself while stopped can keep you motivated, alert, and calm during your travels. At every stop, make it a habit to take out at least one piece of garbage. Many truck stops often offer other amenities such as car washes and vacuum stations if you need to go as far as keeping your vehicle and space clean. Incorporating these quick steps into your routine can help you travel with a clear head and prolong the lifespan of your vehicle.
